When you have a goal...
Do you find yourself waiting for the right time or the perfect plan and never get started?
I have always considered myself to be a “perfectionist”. For many years I thought of it as a net advantage, something I could leverage to get “ahead” in the workplace. Sure there are some beneficial workplace outcomes that are commonly seeing among perfectionists and yes striving for perfection served me at certain times in my career.
However, it has been nothing close to an advantage for me, and in my personal experience, it can be more detrimental than advantageous. As I advanced in my career, I focused more and more on producing “perfect” outcomes, failing to see that striving for perfection doesn’t result in better performance.
The more I strived for “perfection”, the higher levels of stress, burnout, and anxiety I experienced, and the lower my performance was in different areas of my life.
It took me many years to realize that perfect doesn’t exist and the more I expected everything to go smoothly, the more frustrated I got. And guess what, the more frustrated we get early on, the more likely we are to quit.

Being successful at achieving my goals
I have come a long way since then and have been very successful in achieving the goals that I set for myself.
Here is what I do:
- Instead of waiting for the right time or the perfect plan, I just get started.
- I pursue mastery not perfection.
- I go in expecting to fail at times. Learning cannot occur without failure.
- I go in expecting to be uncomfortable.
- I use feedback from others to spot flaws and opportunities for improvement.
- I give myself 30 days on that initial plan I made for myself.
- After those 30 days, I decide what adjustments I need to make. Making adjustments is the important part, you can’t give up. Just re-focus and get back to work.
